Understanding Optimal Care for Your Senior Dog
At what age is my dog considered a senior?
Small breed dogs are considered seniors between 7 and 9 years of age. Larger breed dogs can be considered seniors as soon as 5 years of age.
How long do dogs live?
Dogs live on average 10 years. Small breed dogs live longer, averaging 15 plus years. Large breed dogs usually live 7 to 8 years. Medium breed dogs live 8 to 12 years.
What are common health issues in senior dogs and how can I recognize them?
Health conditions in senior dogs are similar to those in people. They can develop dental disease, vision changes, arthritis, and are more prone to infections, such as ear infections and urinary tract infections.
How often should I bring my senior dog for checkups?
Your senior pet should be examined at least once a year by a veterinarian, perhaps sooner, every 6 months or so if managing a chronic health issue.
What changes should I make to my senior dog's diet?
For senior dogs, we recommend increasing moisture intake by adding water or perhaps canned food to help support their kidneys. Joint supplements and fish oils can also help support healthy brain and joints for senior dogs.
How can I help manage my senior dog's arthritis or joint pain?
Supplements are a great option for senior dogs. But if it becomes too uncomfortable for them to maintain their daily life, speak with your veterinarian about pain medications or alternative therapies that can help with comfort.
What signs indicate that my senior dog might be experiencing cognitive decline?
Cognitive decline in dogs can present in a few different ways. They may not be as willing to go for walks, get confused around doors by going to the wrong side, or may vocalize at strange times in the middle of the night or when nobody is home.
How can I tell if my senior dog is in pain or uncomfortable?
Signs of pain or discomfort can be noticed by your dog not wanting to go for as long of walks, not wanting to get up on furniture, slowing down on stairs, or limping, which is the most obvious sign.
How can I modify my home to make it more comfortable for my senior dog?
Modifications include providing extra comfy bedding for them to lie on, stairs or ramps to help them get on and off furniture, and avoiding lots of stairs if possible.
