Everything You Need to Know About Pet Microchipping
What is a pet microchip and what does it do?
A pet microchip is a permanent form of identification for your pet. If your pet were to be lost without tags or a collar, we can identify them using the microchip.
Can microchips be used to track my pet?
Unfortunately, we cannot track pets with microchips, but there are products available that allow you to do that.
How do I get my pet microchipped?
You would bring your pet to a veterinarian or a local humane society offering pet microchips with a scheduled appointment.
How much does it cost to microchip my pet?
Microchipping is fairly inexpensive.
Does microchipping my pet require surgery or anesthesia?
Microchipping your pet does not require anesthesia. It can be done on an awake pet. Small cats and dogs may prefer sedation or anesthesia since it is a slightly larger needle than a vaccination needle.
Are there major risks associated with having a microchip implanted in my pet?
There's very minimal risk of implanting pets with microchips. Your pet may experience a little bit of soreness around the site or could develop an infection if done improperly.
What does the pet microchip registration process look like?
Microchip registration is fairly simple. You attach the microchip number to an email address for your contact information to ensure your address, phone numbers, and contact preferences are correct.
Who can scan my pet's microchip information?
Any microchip scanner at a veterinarian or a local humane society would be able to read the number associated with your pet.
Will a microchip really make it more likely for me to get my pet back if lost?
Absolutely. If your pet is lost without tags, there is no identification for anybody to reunite your pet with you.
Are there other products that can connect to my pet's microchip?
Yes! Microchips can be connected to doggy doors, pet doors, and feeders to help limit access to specific pets.
